Los Cabos, Mexico
On the Baja Californian peninsula on the Pacific coast of Mexico you can see humpbacks breach, trek mountains and desert, and play Championship golf designed by the greats.
Seeing the mighty humpback whale break the glistening water’s surface, arching itself backwards and then come crashing back down into the deep of the Sea of Cortez is reason enough to head for Los Cabos.
It’s in this sun-drenched slice of Latin America that the humpback, together with the greys and blues, head to mate, give birth and raise their young in temperate waters, and you can hardly blame them.
Los Cabos is on the Pacific side of Mexico, at the southern-most tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, and it’s a place of contrasts, from the golden perfection of the desert on its doorstep to the vibrant green alpine peaks of the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range. Then, from the rugged coastline you plunge into the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez, where, aside from the whale watching, you can get up close with the locals – from turtles to parrotfish – and dive into the big blue.
This perfect triumvirate of ocean, desert and mountain, provides the ideal canvas for golf designers to go about their business and they’ve done so with gusto, crafting a plentiful array of pristine courses among the cacti and in the foothills, with the ocean ever prevalent in the background. There’s 18 courses in this comparatively small area of Mexico making choosing which to play the hardest part when it comes to finding good golf. Jack Nicklaus, Fred Couples, Tom Fazio, Greg Norman and Robert Trent Jones Jr are among those to have made their mark, and if you know the right people, the private clubs such as Cove Club [Nicklaus], Diamante [Davis Love III], and Querencia [Fazio] are among those to seek out, but Championship-quality is definitely not in short supply.
