Prague, Czech Republic

The fairytale capital of Europe and PGA golf. Explore the gothic medieval city of Prague and play golf amid Bohemian forest with chateaux for a clubhouse.

Even the 435km-long Vltava River that runs through Bohemian Forest, past grand palaces and medieval villages, must pause a while as it passes through Prague, a city revealed to the world in the late-1980s as communism came to an end during the Velvet Revolution. It’s a fairytale city with its gothic architecture, maze of cobbled streets, ancient stone bridges, hilltop castles, making it a muse for endless tales, both fact and fiction.

Terracotta-tiled rooftops cover the city, with dramatic spires bursting through, and then what lies beneath is a city to get lost in, and discover such monuments as the Baroque splendor of St Nicholas church; the 16-arch, 14th-century Charles Bridges; or the UNESCO-protected Prague Castle, the official seat of the president, but former home to kings of Bohemia and Roman emperors.

Art comes in every form, either on the street or in the galleries where you’ll find the best of Bohemia, cubists, surrealists, constructivisits and any form of modern art you care to mention.

And then we have the beer, so much beer. The world-famous Bohemian hops put Czech beer on the map and in Prague – and also very nearby in Pilsner, the home of pilsner, which put it on the map in the 1800s – you get the very best. There’s around 35 breweries in the city, including monastery breweries with roots as far back as the 900s, and others more inline with the modern thirst for IPAs and pale ales. Breweries in medieval coach houses, breweries with restaurants, ship-shaped breweries, and then we have the beer halls, including some selling more than a hundred different varieties. Even your humble bar will sell more than your average craft specialist back home.

The only thing to remember is to make sure you play your golf – which is as high-standard as the beer is in ABV – before the beer halls and breweries, and not after it.
